Looking for a Stainless Steel Rice Cooker?
You will find it HERE on my Stainless Steel Rice Cooker LIST of the Best! Helpful Tips and Recommendations!
I can’t remember when I was more enthusiastic about researching and reviewing a kitchen appliance than I was trying to find the best Stainless Steel Rice Cooker for my needs.
Like many health-conscious people I am concerned about the toxic chemicals that leach into the food we eat for the sake of convenience. The various “Non-Stick” coatings give off dangerous fumes and transfer BPA (bisphenol A.) that studies have linked various health issues to.
So, I decided Stainless Steel was my best choice for a Rice Cooker.
What Grade of Stainless Steel is Best for a Rice Cooker?
With over 25 years as a machine tool designer I have a lot of familiarity with the various grades of stainless steel.
First of all the term “Grade” does not denote the quality. It refers to the metallurgical composition.
Stainless steels are alloyed for different applications that include food, aerospace, plumbing, etc. There are several grades of SS that are used for food applications but the most common is 304 SS.
Unlike the name implies, stainless steel will stain! One of the alloy metals used to create SS is iron in a small amount. This element will cause the surface of your rice cooker to show a slight discoloration. Other foods may cause a different stain effect due to the acidity.
This light staining is easily removed by simply heating some white vinegar or apple cider vinegar in the cooking pot.
The advantages of Stainless Steel for cooking food are numerous including its non-reactivity with the food, it won’t absorb colors or odors, it won’t react to acidic foods, it won’t rust or tarnish or pit or peel, and it will not transfer dangerous toxic fumes into the food like “Non-Stick Coatings” are reported to do.
My Stainless Steel Rice Cooker Choice!
I ended up purchasing the Aroma Simply Stainless 6-Cup Rice Cooker (SEE BELOW). I decided it was the best choice for my particular needs at the time, almost 2 year ago. It has worked perfectly!
I use it approx. twice per week and it has never failed to produce a perfect batch of rice, even when I don’t get the measurements exactly right. It is very basic and also very inexpensive.
It is so simple to use. Simply measure out the rice into the included measuring cup. Dump it into a bowl and add some water to soak for a few minutes (This is important to remove most of the starch.) Then rinse the rice and dump it into the Stainless Steel cooking bowl. Add water up to the correct measuring line. Turn the Rice Cooker on and approx. 23 minutes later it will switch to Warm automatically. Your perfect pot of rice is ready to serve.
I only use filtered water from my Faucet Mount Water Filter for cooking. It definitely improves the taste and its healthier.
Looking back I wish I had selected a Multi-Function Rice Cooker (SEE BELOW) that would also serve as an Electric Pressure Cooker & Slow Cooker also or a Multi-Function Electric Pressure Cooker that could be used as a Rice Cooker, etc. (SEE: Best Electric Pressure Cooker)
These excellent multi-function appliances save counter top space (scarce in my kitchen) big time and give excellent value. Something to think about!
I learned the best way to make sure my rice turns out perfect each time is to follow the simple but important instructions.
Measure the rice and water accurately
Wash the rice thoroughly using a Rice Washer or screen.
