The average water pressure from a typical residential water utility is between 50 to 120 psi., and is usually regulated down to 60 psi. Were as a good quality electric pressure washer will produce up to 2000 psi at 1.5 gallons per minute. And a gas powered pressure washer up to 3000 psi.
Benefits of Using a Pressure Washer to Clean your Car
Pressure washing your car has several very important benefits. Probably the most important benefit is it has enough pressure to blast away the abrasive dirt and grime before you begin the washing process. This is extremely important so the gritty dirt doesn’t scratch the paint while scrubbing it.

Dangers of Using a Pressure Washer!
Its important to keep in mind you can cause serious damage to your car’s finish if there are chips in the paint. If you hit one of those areas with too much pressure the water can get under the edge of the paint and lift off a large patch that could cost hundreds of $$$’s to fix. You can damage or actually blast off your car’s trim and other exterior attachments like mirrors, tail lamp lenses with a pressure washer if your not careful.
It may be obvious but bears mentioning – a pressure washer puts out a high pressure focused stream of water. It can really cause a painful and potentially serious injury if it is directed at your body. Even a quick blast to your hand or finger can ruin your day, so be careful. Which is Best for washing your car – Gas Powered or Electric Pressure Washer?
I have used both electric powered and gasoline powered pressure washers for cleaning my cars. To work well for washing your car it needs to put out a minimum of 1800 psi. Either one works well if used correctly.
A gas powered pressure washer can be more difficult to start and you have to deal with dangerous gasoline. They are also louder than an electric pressure washer.
On the plus side a gasoline powered pressure washer is generally more powerful, producing pressures in excess of 2600 psi. which makes them better for other pressure washing jobs around the house like cleaning driveways, sidewalks, siding or gutters. Plus, you don’t have a power cord to deal with.
An electric pressure washer is generally handier than a gas powered one because you just connect the hose, plug it in and go. They are quieter and they are less expensive too.
Top quality Electric Pressure Washers (like the ones listed below) can produce in excess of 2000 psi.
With an electric pressure washer you do have to contend with a power cord. Electric Pressure Washers like the ones recommended BELOW have features that make them very versatile for other cleaning chores.
